Senior cricket bats come in a variety of weights, with full size blades generally falling between 2lb 6oz and 3lb 2oz. Rather than specify the exact weight, many manufacturers specify a weight bracket, either light, medium or heavy. The table below illustrates how the weight bracket corresponds to the actual weight of the bat.

Light weight bats are ideal for touch players who seek to time the ball into gaps rather than muscle it to the boundary. A lighter bat facilitates great manoeuvrability and quick stroke play. These bats are therefore ideal for technically correct players, and those for whom heavier bats are restrictive. Medium weight bats provide a balance between manoeuvrability and power. They allow good bat speed, whilst providing good ‘value for shots’, meaning the ball will travel further even when you don’t quite time it. Heavier weight bats are ideal for power players who like to hit the ball hard. They are usually thicker, containing more wood and so propel the ball off the bat at a faster rate. They can however be difficult to control, but are preferred in 20/20 games which are becoming increasingly popular
